Bernard James Newton, Jr., MSMFT, LCMHC
Before entering into private practice, I earned a B.S. in Neuroscience from the College of William & Mary (Williamsburg, VA) and a Masters in Marital and Family Therapy from Fuller Theological Seminary (Pasadena, CA). While at Fuller, I completed practicum training at Citrus Counseling, providing individual and family therapy, as well as leading group therapy experiences for addicts, domestic violence perpetrators, and sexual offenders.
After receiving my Masters, I moved to Raleigh and began working at the Center for Psychological and Family Services, where I completed my certification as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor. I was a member of the staff there for four years before founding Newton Psychotherapy and Consulting at the end of 2011. In order to enhance and deepen my work around sexuality, I have completed the Sexual Health Certificate Program at the University of Michigan School of Social Work (Sex Therapist & Sexuality Educator tracks). For many years, I was certified as a sex addiction therapist and now use the out-of-control sexual behavior model to support clients struggling with sexual behavior questions and conflicts.
Having received my MSMFT from Fuller, I’m able to offer a uniquely integrated perspective for those who are interested in exploring the intersection of mental health and/or sexuality and spiritual life. While I have specific educational training in the theology and practices of the Christian, Buddhist, and yogic traditions, I thoroughly enjoy exploring the myriad manifestations of spirituality in our world as I work with people from diverse spiritual and non-religious backgrounds.
I enjoy living in downtown Winston-Salem with my husband Christopher and lovely dog Harvey. When not in the office, you might find me wandering around downtown with friends, volunteering at the community theatre, or planning for our next fun travel adventure.
